100 Days Smarter!

We started our 100th Day of School out right by attending Mass with Father Stan.
Then the festivities began!  First up was our "Find 100 Hershey's Kisses" game.  I wrote a number from 1-100 on the bottom of 100 Hershey's Kisses and hid them around the classroom.  After the students found them, they had to read the number to me, then match it to a number on the hundreds chart.  Once the chart was full we split the candies to eat throughout the day!

Next, the kiddos visited stations to add 10 groups of 10 items to a crown they could wear for the rest of the 100th Day.

Then we visited game stations with the theme of 100.  Each group had 100 seconds to complete each center...

In one center, students competed to string the most Fruit Loops onto a piece of fishing line.

In another, they tried to build a 100 cup structure.

Students worked as a team to build the tallest tower out of pattern blocks.  There were some pretty ingenious ideas to make the towers stable!

I hid 100 sight words in a container filled with puffballs for the kids to play Shake It.  They were to shake and write down as many sight words as possible in the allotted time.

One of the favorites seemed to be the 100 Bear Toss.  Students worked as a group to see how many of the 100 bear manipulatives they could toss into a basket.  There was a lot of laughter and excitement at this center!

At the end of the day, each student received cookies in the shape of "100" to enjoy at home, while telling their families of the activities of the day.

We have had a blast for the last 100 days of school!  I can't wait for the rest of the school year!

Energy Moves Things

K/1 has been studying different types of energy (light, heat, sound) and how they can change or move things.  In our experiment, we filled a film canister with water, dropped an AlkaSeltzer tablet in, and quickly snapped on the lid.  We thought it was SO cool when the lid shot off!  Even when it didn't work, our little scientists started hypothesizing about why it didn't work and how we could change it next time.  We certainly saw that energy can move things today!
